Superintendent Update 10-9-20

BUHSD Families,

We hope your student and family have had a good fall break and are ready to resume school Monday morning, October 12th, when we begin our hybrid schedule.

 With the start of hybrid learning, please remember the new bell schedule specific to each campus goes into effect for all option A students for both in-person and distance learning days.  Hybrid Group 1 will be in-person on Mondays and Thursdays.  Hybrid Group 2 will be in-person on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Students are distance learning on the opposite two days during the week and on Wednesdays.  If you have questions on your student’s group, please contact your student’s school.

As your student gets ready to return for in-person instruction, please remember that students should stay home if they feel ill or exhibiting any of the following symptoms: cough, sore throat, headaches, congestion/runny nose, fever of 100.4 or higher without medication, difficulty breathing, aches/chills, vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea.

Also, please remind your student of the following expectations as they return to campus in-person:

  • Have your temperature checked as you enter campus or a bus;
  • Wear a cloth face coverings at all times which aligns with the district dress code (including covering a person’s nose and mouth, ideally fitting snugly but comfortable against the sides of the face and under the chin, remaining affixed in place without the use of one’s hands, no holes, and the content of any printing on it being be school appropriate);
  • Follow signage for modified traffic patterns (in parking lots as well as in the hallways and around campus);
  • Maintain physical distancing as much as possible;
  • Avoid gathering in common areas; and
  • Wash your hands and/or use hand sanitizer frequently.

Visit the district website at https://www.buhsd.org/hybrid_learning for more information on this.

With the hybrid phase, bus transportation will begin for students who live within a school attendance area that is more than 1 ½ miles from the school.  To find your students bus stop and pick up time, go to the district website (www.buhsd.org) and select Transportation under departments.  On the Transportation department page, click on the “Find My Bus Route” icon.  It will take you to a site page where you can enter your address and find the information you need.  You can also find your bus routes on the same web page by clicking on your school and finding your residential subdivision or nearest cross streets.

We are continuing to monitor the data from the reopening dashboard.  As a district, we are listed with an overall risk level of “moderate” with our recommended learning scenario being “hybrid with onsite support” for the second week in a row.

  • Cases: we had a decrease from 36.55 cases to 28.99 cases per 100,000 population, so we are maintaining this benchmark at the moderate level;
  • Percent Positivity: this percentage remains under 4% going from 3.73% to 3.82%, so we are maintaining this benchmark;
  • Covid-like Illness: we are still meeting this benchmark with Covid-like illness staying at just 2% for consecutive weeks.

Also, for those who have asked about paying for lunches:  All BUHSD students eat for free for the remainder of 2020. Breakfasts will be available before school, lunches will be available during lunch periods, and take-home meals will be available at dismissal to feed the students on distance learning days. Students should look for the Chartwells meal service locations throughout campus.  We will continue our curbside meal service at BUHS, EFHS, and YHS from 9 AM till 12 PM or 5 PM to 8 PM Monday through Friday for students who are staying completely distance learning or online and for others in the community with children age 18 and under.

And finally, there was an announcement on social media that there would be community COVID-19 testing this weekend at EFHS.  We just heard from the company that they will not be at EFHS this weekend.  We again apologize for any inconvenience.

Again, we hope that your student and family have had a good fall break and are ready to resume school Monday morning, October 12th, when we begin our hybrid schedule.  We look forward to having our students back on campus.

Sincerely,

Rob Roberson
