BUHSD Update

BUHSD Families,

I want to start by thanking everyone who completed the survey sent out last week.  Your feedback is important to the District and the Governing Board.  And, I want to praise our students for wearing masks and following other directions on mitigation strategies while on campus these first few weeks of hybrid learning.  It has been wonderful to have students back in the classroom!

This week, our Governing Board held a Work Study Session where the main topic discussed was safely re-opening schools during our current pandemic.  The Governing Board reviewed the survey data from parents, students, and staff.  They also heard valuable medical information from Dr. Scott Steingard, a family physician in the Phoenix area who established the COVID-19 Pandemic Response Committee for the Federation of State Medical Boards.  Scott Acton, the Exceptional Student Services Director for the District and a licensed Psychologist, provided the Governing Board with an overview of the referral process and support services in place for our students struggling with mental health issues.  Information on that referral process, if you are concerned about a student, can be found on our district website at www.buhsd.org.  With the information garnered during the work study session, the Governing Board will have an agenda item on the November meeting to approve an educational delivery model for the remainder of fall semester and the start of spring semester.

As we have been doing since August, we are continuing to monitor the data on the school re-opening dashboard each week.  As a district, we are still listed with an overall risk level of “moderate” with our recommended learning scenario being “hybrid with onsite support”.

  • Cases: we had a slight decrease from 75.62 cases to 73.10 cases per 100,000 population, so we are maintaining this benchmark at the moderate level;
  • Percent Positivity: this percentage decreased from 6.91% to 5.5% so we are also maintaining this benchmark at the moderate level;
  • Covid-like Illness: we are still meeting this benchmark at the minimum level with Covid-like illness staying below 5% for several weeks in a row.

In closing, I want to wish our families and our community a safe Halloween weekend!

Sincerely,

Rob Roberson

Interim Superintendent
