People holding cellphones

In accordance with a new Arizona law (House Bill 2484, A.R.S. ยง 15-120.05), all public and charter schools across the state โ€” including those in the Buckeye Union High School District โ€” are now required to limit student access to cell phones and personal electronic devices during the school day.

To comply with this legislation and support focused, distraction-free learning environments, BUHSD is implementing a new district-wide policy regarding device use during class time. Under this policy, students will only be allowed to use their phones or personal devices during class if:

  • The use is for educational purposes, as directed by the teacher

  • There is an emergency

  • The device is needed to address a medical condition

In short: students must keep phones off and put away during all class periods unless one of these three exceptions applies.

Itโ€™s important to note that students will still be allowed to use their personal devices before school, after school, during lunch, and between classes. However, during instructional time, the focus will be on learning โ€” free from digital distractions.

In addition, schools are now required to restrict access to social media platforms on school internet networks, unless they are being used for educational purposes.

At BUHSD, we believe this change will have a positive impact on student engagement and success. Reducing screen time during the school day supports mental well-being, boosts academic performance, and encourages stronger connections between students and their peers and teachers.

โ€œAs a district, our goal is not only to follow state law, but also to create the best possible environment for our students to learn, grow, and thrive,โ€ said Dr. Steve Bebee, BUHSD Superintendent. โ€œWe appreciate your continued support as we work together to reinforce this new policy.โ€

Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss these expectations with their students and help reinforce the importance of staying focused during class time. END.
