Health & Well Being

The Governing Board’s decisions during this pandemic center on the balance of safety of our staff and students while delivering the best education possible during these difficult times.  Parents/Guardians will be asked to sign a Waiver, Release and Assumption of Risk Form or an Acknowledgement and Disclosure Form before the student is permitted to return to campus for learning.

School Campuses and Classrooms

● Every attempt will be made to social distance in the classroom.  Classroom seating will be arranged at tables or desks facing one direction with as much space as possible between students and staff.

● As much as possible, physical distancing will be maintained in open or common areas, such as hallways, stairwells, gyms, and auditoriums.  Hallways and walkways will be clearly marked with instructions to designate traffic flow to minimize congestion and congregation.

● Restrooms will remain open to all students and staff, but social distancing guidelines should be followed.

● Students will utilize their own school supplies and keep their items in their backpack throughout the day.

● Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottle to school. Students can refill from one of our water filling stations on campus. Regular water fountains will not be available.

● Adjustments to drop-off and pick-up routines may be made to facilitate physical distancing and reduce student congestion and congregation.

● Signage will be posted throughout campus regarding face covering requirements, hand washing procedures and social distancing reminders.

● Physical education classes may focus on personal fitness instead of high-contact exercises and will take place outside, when weather permits. Equipment will be cleaned in between uses.

● Courses that involve significant interpersonal contact, such as labs, will be modified to allow for physical distancing.

● Special education and English language services will continue under the close direction of our educators and individual IEP Teams. Students will be provided interventions and support as outlined in their plans.

FACE COVERINGS

● Maricopa County, Governor’s Executive Order and BUHSD Governing Board GBGB currently requires that all staff, students, vendors, visitors, and volunteers wear cloth face coverings while on campus.

● Each school site will provide (5) five reusable/washable masks for students and staff.

Cloth Face coverings must align with the district dress code; including covering a person’s nose and mouth, ideally fitting snugly but comfortably against the sides of the face and under the chin, remaining affixed in place without the use of one’s hands and are not to have holes.

● Any student who has difficulty breathing or who is incapable of physically removing the face covering on his/her own will not wear cloth face coverings, and alternate methods of protection will be discussed by parents and staff.  A waiver will need to be signed documenting the accommodation being made. BUHSD Cloth Facial Covering Exemption Form

● Students who refuse to comply with the safety protocols adopted for in-person learning will be assigned to the distance learning or online learning program pursuant to A.R.S. 15-841(F).

HAND HYGIENE

FREQUENT HAND WASHING/CLEANING IS ENCOURAGED AT REGULAR INTERVALS THROUGHOUT THE DAY WITH BOTH SOAP AND WATER OR HAND SANITIZER. INSTRUCTIONS FOR HAND WASHING INCLUDE:

● Hand sanitizer will be available at various stations strategically located throughout high-traffic areas of campus.

● All classrooms will have hand sanitizer.

HEALTH SCREENINGS

Prevention begins at home. Students should stay home if they feel ill or are exhibiting any symptoms of COVD-19; cough, sore throat, headaches, congestion/runny nose, fever of 100.4 or higher, difficulty breathing, aches/chills, vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea.

We encourage families to utilize our Family Health Guide for a friendly one page resource to determine if your child should attend school.

Students will complete a temperature screening each day before they get on a school bus or enter a campus. Each school will provide specific details on the process.

If the teacher or staff member has concerns based on a visual check of a student, they will contact the school nurse prior to sending the student to the nurse’s office.

Students will be reminded of proper hygiene, including: Avoiding touching the eyes, nose, and mouth and covering the mouth when coughing.

Covering the nose when sneezing and safely discarding tissues.
