BUCKEYE, AZ — A Buckeye Union High School teacher is receiving recognition for the difference she makes in the lives of her students.
BUHS math teacher Samantha Hoard was recently featured by ABC15 Arizona in a story highlighting her unique approach to teaching math and the relationships she builds with students in her classroom.
The feature, “Buckeye math teacher helps students find the equation for success,” gives viewers a look inside Hoard’s classroom and explores how she works to help students feel more confident - not only in mathematics, but in their ability to overcome challenges.
For Hoard, creating a positive classroom environment is an important part of helping students learn.
Many students arrive in high school with the belief that they simply are not good at math. Hoard takes a different approach, creating a classroom where students are encouraged to ask questions, work through difficult concepts and understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process.
Her impact extends beyond the traditional math curriculum.
As a teacher of juniors and seniors, Hoard understands that her students are preparing for life beyond high school. While mathematical concepts remain an important part of her instruction, she also looks for opportunities to connect learning to the real-world situations students will encounter as young adults.
Understanding finances, credit and everyday problem-solving are just as relevant to a student's future as the equations they encounter in class.
That perspective reflects the broader work taking place across Buckeye Union High School District to prepare students for what's next.
Whether a student plans to attend college, enter the workforce, pursue a career and technical field, serve in the military or take another path after graduation, BUHSD educators are helping students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to take that next step.
ABC15's feature captures one example of that work through Hoard's classroom.
But for the students who see her every day, her impact goes beyond what can be captured in a television segment.
Hoard's goal is to help students leave her classroom knowing they are capable of tackling challenges, learning from setbacks and continuing to grow.
As she shared with ABC15, if even one student leaves her classroom believing, “I can do this,” she considers that a success.
Buckeye Union High School is proud to see Hoard's dedication recognized by ABC15 Arizona and to celebrate the positive impact she continues to make on BUHS students.
