A group of BUHS participants poses behind their completed welding projects at the 2025 Welding Thunder fabrication competition.

BUCKEYE, AZ — Buckeye Union High School will host the 2026 14th Annual Welding Thunder Team Fabrication Competition on November 20–21, 2026, at the district’s facilities in Buckeye, bringing together Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs from secondary and postsecondary schools for a two-day showcase of welding, fabrication, teamwork and technical skill.

Presented in partnership with BUHSD CTE, this year’s competition theme is “Build the Big Boss 8.” Teams will take on a hands-on challenge to fabricate an 8-inch K-tube rocket stove with a 30-inch-diameter griddle and grill combination.

During the first day, participants will use provided project drawings and updated guidelines to fabricate their projects using 3/16-inch carbon steel sheet. On the second day, teams will customize their grills with their own secret components and evaluate their work using the criteria outlined in the event guidelines.

The competition provides students with an opportunity to apply technical knowledge, demonstrate craftsmanship, solve problems and collaborate in a competitive, real-world fabrication environment. It also highlights the importance of career and technical education in preparing students for future careers in skilled trades and related industries.

Advanced registration is required. Instructors interested in participating should submit a letter of intent identifying their team and school to receive updated event guidelines and project drawings when they become available.

The event is coordinated by BUHS Instructor Mr. Oscar Olivas. Scholarships and volunteer support are provided by AWS District 21. Friday lunch will be provided by UA Local 469 Arizona Pipetrades Phoenix.
